CERTIFIED MEETING
PROFESSIONAL (CMP)

In 1985 the Convention Industry Council instituted a certification program for meeting professionals. This important and respected certification provides recognition for those who have chosen meeting management as a career. The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation connotes professionalism, expertise, and dedication to the industry. More that 6,000 people have earned the CMP designation Requirements include:
Current employment in meeting management,
Having “responsibility and accountability” for successful completion of meetings,
A mimnimum of three years of meeting management experience, or graduation from a four-year accredited university with a major in meeting and convention management,
Completion of a 15-page application with a score of at least 100 out of a possible 150 points,
A 150 word essay on the CMP designation’s effect on the applicant’s professionalism and education, and
Passing a 150-question exam.
A special report on industry certification concluded that CMPs command more respect from peers and vendors, and typically earn more than non-certified meeting managers” (Professional Meeting Management 4th Edition, p 416).
